Sydenham trio rides East Grinstead evening tens

On Tuesday evenings East Grinstead CC runs a summer series of evening tens on a two-lap lanes course, the G10/39, which starts from Horne golf club just off the A22.
It’s a very nice course on quiet country lanes, with good surfaces and is basically flat with just one side of the lap featuring a couple of uphill drags.

Sydenham’s Robert Royston, Mike Thorogood and Luke Edwardes-Evans rode three events in July and August, with Mike missing the middle one.
July 25: RR 26.30 (TT); MT 27.53 (rd plus one wrong turn!); LE-E 29.10. Winner: John Rogers (EGCC) 23.09
August 1: RR 26.08 (TT); LE-E 28.01. Winner: Marek Siwicki (Addiscombe CC) 22.54
August 15: RR 27.42 (2nd rd bike); LE-E 29.23 (rd); MT 30.09 (rd plus two wrong turns!). Winner: Siwicki 22.22

Great fun, especially the beers on the way home. Very friendly timekeepers and excellent marshaling from our friends at the East Grinstead.
We will be back next year, let’s get a bigger team together as you can also ride it as a two-up.

Bob/Interclub TTs – Update 2

Hi All,

Just spoke to Maryse. She went to see Bob yesterday and will be going again on Sunday.

Sounds like physically Bob is OK and still going for walks around the grounds. He is however still confused and having to be spoken to slowly so he understands things, although this is impart due to his hearing issues. He has been having a therapist each day and will probably be changing his meds on Tuesday. There is also a possibility he may at some stage be transferred from Maidstone to Ashford hospital to aid his recovery. I will let you know more as I hear it.

Looks like Richard Birtwhistle is the only person thinking about riding tomorrow!

I intend being at the bottom of Polhill on Sunday morning at 9.15am for the club run.

Anyone else likely to be there?

Regards

David

Bob/Interclub TTs

Dear all,

I spoke to Maryse a little while ago to get a update on Bob. It sounds like the minor stroke has now been confirmed. She went with her daughter to see Bob yesterday and took him for a walk around the hospital grounds. He is apparently very confused and having trouble talking and finishing sentences. He is expected to have an MRI today.

The results from the Hilly on Saturday can be found here.

Thanks to the Avanti for lending all gear to run the event

Also thanks to the following for their assistance;
Robert Royston
Peter Mahoney
Luke Evans
Dave Fleming

Good job it was Saturday it happened because we rode part of the course in reverse yesterday as part of our club run. We found that Copping’s Road heading towards Hubbards was closed and there were traffic lights on Ide Hill!

GS/311 Gracious Lane, Sat 4th Sept – Update

Dear all,

In the process of trying to organise the event tomorrow I have discovered that Bob is in Maidstone Hospital having been moved from Pembury Hospital where he was taken first. They are awaiting on test results but it sounds like he has suffered a minor stroke. I will keep you informed when I hear more. Wish him better quickly!

Obviously as a result I have no access to the club equipment for the event tomorrow at 9.00am on the GS/311 Gracious Lane course. I am trying to borrow equipment from one of the other clubs. It now looks like there are traffic lights on the Gracious Lane bridge which will hopefully be gone by tomorrow morning. If not we might have to do two times up Bayley’s Hill.

Providing I can get the equipment. I only have 4 people confirmed for tomorrow;
Robert Royston
Peter Mahoney
Me
Martin Brown (7oaks Tri)

Can I have one other person confirmed please.

Regards

GS/311 Gracious Lane, Sat 4th Sept

As previously mentioned this Saturday at 9.00am we are organizing the Hilly 21  on the GS/311 Gracious Lane. As it stands the roadworks that were Chiddingstone Causeway seem to have gone but I understand there were further issues at the top of Bayley’s Hill. The website says these will finish on the 2nd. So the course needs to be checked still. Hopefully all will be OK on the day, but watch out for further updates.

Now we need assistance to run this. All being equal we can get away with 5 people, but more are always welcome. Can people get back to me as soon as possible please.

Regards

Jean Beale – Appreciation

JEAN BEALE

19th JUNE 1938 – 29th JULY 2021

Happily married in 1957 – Sixty Four years together

I have been asked by a devastated Ron to give an appreciation of his beloved wife, whose fight against cancer finally and suddenly took her while in hospital. His large family, children Nathan and Emma, grandchildren, relatives, ‘Sydenham’ and others, gathered ‘up the road’ in the lovely Holy Trinity Charing Heath church. We were welcomed by the reverend Sandra Marsh, with eulogies which were given by his young grandson Darryl, who spoke very confidently, Charlie Beale – ‘My Mrs Wonderful’ and a personal tribute by Andrea. After the service we all congregated at the conveniently placed Red Lion at Charing Heath for refreshments. At Ron’s request donations were given to Cancer Research U.K. They are getting on top of it but it still takes too many lives.

Jean joined the ‘Sydenham’ before their marriage, to enjoy cycling and taking part in reliability trials but did not wish to compete. She loved to go to France where the club took part in ‘gentlemen’s’ events and enjoy the banter and comradeship of all the other bike riders. Happy memories! She was a lovely lass and will be sorely missed, in particular yours truly.

Q10/19 Tonbridge, Sun 22nd August

Dear all,

A reminder that the next TT takes place this Sunday at 7.30am on the Q10/19 Tonbridge course.
This is being organized by the 7Oaks Tri.

The following event isn’t until the 21 mile hilly on Saturday 4th September at 9.00am. This is the next/last event that we will have to organise so look forward to receiving some offers of help.

It would appear there will be roadworks on Chiddingstone Causeway so we may have to amend the course. We let you know the details nearer the time.

As it stands I was thinking of riding the Q10/19 so won’t be out for a Club Run.

KCA Marshalling

As you can see from the correspondence below we have received late advice that we are supposed to supply 1 marshal for the KCA this year. There is only one event left the 3 up TTT this weekend.

Is anyone able to assist?

Jean Beale

Bob has asked us to circulate the sad new that Jean died in hospital with cancer on the 29th July and her funeral will take place at Charing Heath Church on the 17th August at 2.00 p.m. With Ron, she was a friend and companion going back to the 1950`s.
